Gary serves as the Chair of the California Sentinel Sites for Nature. As a part of this role, he is working to increase the broader impact of the CA-SSN, create research opportunities, and develop sustainable data practices across the network. He also sits on the California Biodiversity Network (CBN) Steering Committe and orgnaizes the Climate-Biodiversity Sentinel Sites Network Roundtable and organizes the Coordination Committee for the CA-SSN. Gary is generally interested in research that answers questions using long-term data. He has worked in freshwater ecosystems, focusing on amphibian ecology, evolution, and conservation, with objectives that straddle both applied and basic science to understand species’ and populations’ responess to growing ecological tensions in freshwater ecosystems. Gary earned his Ph.D. from UCLA and his BA from Antioch College. He is based at UC Davis and holds an Adjunct Professor appointment in the department of Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology and serves as the Director of Strategic Engagement for the UC Natural Reserve System (UCNRS).
